When someone nearby searches for a shop, clinic or service, Google shows a short list of local results. Being on that list brings calls, visits and enquiries from people who are ready to buy. Local SEO is the work of earning that spot. This checklist covers the steps that matter most, in the order we would do them.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the most important local asset. It is the listing that appears on Google Search and Maps with your address, phone number, hours and reviews.
- Claim it and verify that you own the business.
- Choose the right main category. It tells Google what you are, so pick the one that best describes your core service.
- Fill in every field: hours, phone, website, services, a short description and the area you serve.
- Add real photos of your premises, your team and your work. Update them from time to time.
- Keep hours current, including holidays. Wrong information frustrates customers and hurts trust.
2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Your business name, address and phone number, often shortened to NAP, should be written the same way everywhere: your website, your Google profile, social pages and directories. Differences such as "Street" and "St." or an old phone number make it harder for Google to be sure it is the same business.
3. Make your website clearly local
Search engines also read your website to understand where you operate.
- Put your address, phone number and a map on your contact page.
- Mention your town or area naturally in page titles, headings and text, for example in the services you offer there.
- Create a separate page for each main service, so each can rank for its own searches.
- Make sure the site is fast and works well on phones, since most local searches happen on mobile.
4. Ask for reviews, and answer them
Reviews influence both ranking and the decision to call. Build a steady habit:
- Ask happy customers shortly after a job is done, and share a direct link to your review page to make it easy.
- Reply to every review, thanking people for good ones and responding calmly and helpfully to bad ones.
- Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google's rules and can get your listing penalised.
5. List your business in trusted directories
Add your business to reputable directories relevant to your industry and region, with the same name, address and phone details. A few accurate listings are worth more than dozens of careless ones.
6. Post updates and answer common questions
Use your Business Profile to share offers, news and new work. Add the questions customers ask most to your website's FAQ section, with clear answers. This helps people and gives search engines more to understand.
7. Track what happens
Check your profile's performance each month: how many people found you, called, asked for directions or visited the site. Note what changes after each improvement so you know what is working.
How long does it take?
Local results can move within weeks for a business with a well-filled profile, but steady gains usually build over several months as reviews and content add up. Treat it as ongoing upkeep, not a one-off task.
